SAN MATEO, Calif., Aug. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — HealthCrowd, a leading communications platform-as-a-service innovator in healthcare, announced today the outstanding results of a six-month study of digital communication effectiveness in redirecting emergency room visits for health plan members.

HealthCrowd attacked the issue of unnecessary emergency room visits through digital communication and education.

Emergency room visits are expensive for the healthcare industry. From experience, health plans know that many visits are not necessary as members could have gone to an urgent care facility or a primary care physician at the time of need. In the longer term, improved preventive care could help maintain optimal health and avoid the emergency room visit in the first place.

HealthCrowd attacked the issue of unnecessary emergency room visits through digital communication and education. Individuals received unique messaging based on their risk group. For example, in high-risk cases, outreach included an invitation to receive follow-up from case management resources.

During the six-month program, more than 20,000 individuals participated, about half in a control group and the other half in the emergency room redirection study group. A subset of 1,500 high utilizers were identified and equally stratified within the control and study groups. Key results of the digital communication redirection study include:

  • 10% decrease in PMPM costs and more than $100,000 saved across all risk groups
  • More than 20% decrease in PMPM costs and over $10,000 saved across the subset of high-risk utilizers
